History and demographic paragraph

There were many Indigenous people groups, but the most populous was the Mapuche, which had the most descendants, with over 1.4 million people identifying as descendants of the Mapuche. Chile was conquered by the Spanish in 1540. It was conquered by Pedro de Valdivia and was under Spanish rule for 278 years until 1818 when it rebelled against the Spanish after the monarch was overthrown by Napoleon. Chile became independent through a political and military rebellion. Some important events after Chile’s independence were the Spanish resistance conquest, the war for independence, the war of the Pacific, wars for more land, and the 1973 military coup. About 88.9% of people are non-indigenous (European/white), so only 11.1% are indigenous. This is because Chile was a hot spot for families looking to arrive in the New World. The indigenous groups played a huge role in Chile's history, fighting the Spanish even after they lost, and they were key to the independence movement. The Indigenous people fought fiercely against the Spanish and conquered the entire area of Chile only in 1550. The Indigenous also kept fighting because the colony was poor, and most lived in poverty. It also didn’t help that the only schools were Roman Catholic schools, so they felt that their new government was not a good fit and wanted to go back to the way it was, where they governed themselves and relied on themselves. They also hated that they took valuable materials from the region, such as gold, and left them poor, so in 1818, they were fed up with the government. After a bunch of events, including some trade cut-offs, they were allowed to have some autonomy by the French, and they finally started getting independence. After a bunch of fighting in the last battle in late 1818, the Spanish allowed Chile to be independent; however, it was weak, and it strived for more land. After a couple of wars, Chile was given a bunch of land from Peru and Argentina, which is how it took so long.
